The Environment Court in Nairobi on Monday compelled the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to close four popular clubs over noise pollution.

B-Club, Kiza, Explorer's Tavern and Space Lounge are the affected joints with all clubs located in the Kilimani area.

A sustained outcry from Kilimani residents had been followed up with a suit from lawyer Cecil Miller.

Judge Loice Komingoi noted that the rights of the petitioners to a healthy environment had been infringed on, further observing the reluctance of authorities including NEMA and the Nairobi county government to undertake their mandate.

"The clubs continued operation of business within the petitioner's area of residence is a violation of their rights to life and right to a clean and healthy environment as contemplated in the constitution," she noted.

Aside from the loud music which residents claim goes on until 7 AM, they had also complained about chaos and indecent behaviour outside the club, particularly in parking lots.

Some families with young children lamented that they had been forced to move to other neighborhoods.

Through Miller, the residents sued B-Concept Limited trading as B-Club Nairobi, Kiza Restaurant and Lounge, Space Lounge and Grill and Explorer's Tavern which were pointed as the main culprits.

He sought a compulsion against NEMA to enforce closure notices against the clubs for contravening the Noise and Excessive Vibrations Control Regulations.

Miller also wanted the clubs stripped of their liquor licences.
