Joe Kadenge, arguably Kenya's greatest footballer, is dead at the age of 84.

Kadenge succumbed to illness while receiving treatment at the Meridian Hospital in Nairobi.

The sad news was confirmed by his son Oscar Kadenge.

"Dad has not been in good shape," he disclosed.

"He had complications in breathing and his sight was also failing. His condition deteriorated when my sister passed on in the USA earlier this year and he was unable to attend."

Kadenge turned out for Maragoli United and Abaluhya United (now AFC Leopards) at club level as well as the national team Harambee Stars.

His exploits on the field saw him leave a mark on African football with the phrase "Kadenge na mpira (Kadenge with the ball)..." among the most famous Kenyan expressions.
