The nominees for this year's Africa Music Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) were announced earlier this week with several Kenyans featuring in a number of categories.
Among them were last year's Best Rap Act (Africa) winner Khaligraph Jones, afro-pop group Sauti Sol, media personalities Willy M Tuva and Jamal Gaddafi, video director Enos Olik as well as hit-makers Fena Gitu and Naiboi.
Interestingly, however, a huge snub appeared to be given to major DJs based in Kenya such as DJ Joe Mfalme with no Kenyan DJ featured in the Best DJ (Africa) category.
Among others, the category featured continental stars such as South Africa's Black Coffee and Nigeria's DJ Spinall.
It wasn't all doom and gloom for Kenyan mix-masters, however, as three US-based Kenyan DJs were nominated in the Best DJ (USA) category.
The three DJs are known to many lovers of Kenyan music for their aggressive promotion of good music from East Africa with shows in various American states and strong online presence.
The three are NBA franchise Dallas Mavericks official DJ Poizon Ivy, Houston-based DJ Shinski and Atlanta-based DJ and event organizer DJ Fully Focus.
DJ Poizon Ivy (Ivy Awino) moved to Dallas from Nairobi at the age of 9 and managed to become the official DJ for WNBA franchise Dallas Wings after college.
She impressed and gained fans touring with WNBA superstars including Skylar Diggins and later inquired about a position with NBA side Dallas Mavericks before being given the job a few months later.
A notable achievement of hers is becoming the first woman to DJ at an NBA All-Star Game.
DJ Fully Focus is based in Atlanta, Georgia and aside from being a touring DJ works as an event organizer and booking agent.
Setting out seriously to cut a niche for himself as a DJ in America in 2005, Fully Focus wisely targeted the Kenyan community and started 'Takeover DJs' with fellow Kenyan DJ Babu.
They went on to make waves in the Kenyan and African entertainment scene in the States with several huge events and other ventures.
Fully Focus has had sets at massive shows such as SXSW 2017 in addition to headlining several shows in Kenya and elsewhere.
DJ Shinski is a common name among Kenyan fans and is known for his top-notch mixes guaranteed to excite.
Based in Houston, Texas, DJ Shinski is quite versatile and is able to hype crowds with various genres from reggae to dancehall as well as East and West African hits.
He was the winner of the 1st DJ Spinoff in Houston and is a two-time nominee in the AFRIMMA Best African DJ (USA) category.
