Kenya took on Egypt in the first match of AFCON 2021 Qualifying, putting up a gutsy fight away from home to secure a valuable draw.

The match ended 1-1 in Alexandria, with a second-half Michael Olunga goal saving the Francis Kimanzi-coached Harambee Stars.

The teams were evenly matched for most of the game, with the Stars displaying resilience and taking the game to their opponents doorstep.

Beautiful solo play from Ayub Timbe in the first half saw him silkily get past three red shirts before scuffling his shot with only the keeper to beat.

But it was the Pharaohs' Mahmoud Karaba who put them ahead moments before the end of the first half.

Harambee Stars came out fighting after the break at the El Borg Stadium, and their steely play was rewarded with a goal in the 68th minute.

Michael Olunga slotted it in with his left foot after some brilliant team play.

As for changes, Ian Otieno came on for Patrick Matasi who was stretchered off due to injury. Isuza also came onto the pitch for an active Timbe after picking up a knock.

Hrambee Stars face Togo on Monday at the Kasarani Stadium and are expected home on Saturday ahead of the match.

Togo will be looking to prove a point as they got battered 1-0 by Comoros in the other pool match.

Kenya is currently ranked 108th in the world by FIFA while Egypt is placed at 58th and 8th in Africa making the result more impressive.
