All nightclubs, bars and entertainment spots in the country are set to be closed on Saturday, 24th August to allow for the national census exercise.

Reports indicate that the government through the Ministry of Interior is expected to issue the directive to ensure maximum participation to guarantee accurate figures.

A number of county governments including the Alfred Mutua-led Machakos County have already declared that all bars will be closed on Saturday.

The last national census exercise was conducted in 2009.

Over the past weekend, the government backtracked on a directive which designated August 26 as a public holiday to ensure maximum enumeration.

“To ensure maximum enumeration during the first two days (August 24 and 25) of the Census period, I have authorized Monday, 26th August 2019 to be a Public Holiday,”  a statement published on the official Presidential website president.go.ke on Friday had read.

However, a second statement was later issued clarifying that Monday, August 26th was not a designated public holiday.

“CORRECTION. Contrary to our earlier dispatch on the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census, we wish to clarify that His Excellency the President did not announce that August 26 will be a public holiday.

"We regret the error and wish to say that as much as the Kenya 2019 Population and Housing Census is important to the country, August 26 which will be on a Monday will not be a public holiday. Our apologies for inconveniences caused by the erroneous communication,” read a statement from PSCU.
